Bajaj IBMS Solutions for Fire Detection
17 January 2018

Refrigerated warehouses and cold storage facilities are temperature controlled environments that contain a wide range of inventory such as fresh and frozen foods, pharmaceuticals and pre-packaged product lines. The ultra dry environment and highly combustible nature of the insulation and packaging materials present a significant fire risk in these facilities. In many cold storage environments, temperatures dip to below -26°C, and conventional point detectors only have an operational threshold of -20°C. Any condensing humid air would completely block a conventional fire detector, with no practical way to quickly defrost the detector. Due to the height of these warehouses it would take a very long time for smoke to reach and activate the conventional detector. In some cases smoke may not even reach the detector. Conventional smoke detectors also present a challenge during maintenance as one would require the use of hoisting equipment to service every smoke detector point. Beam detection is also not the correct solution. Structural movement allows the beam detectors to go out of line and create false alarms. To overcome these challenges, Bajaj IBMS has launched Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems (ASD). The ASD consists of a central detection unit which continuously draws and samples air through a network of pipes to detect smoke. The air in the space being monitored is sucked in for precise analysis by the scattered-light smoke detector located in the sampling chamber. If it detects smoke particles beyond a pre-set threshold, it triggers an immediate alarm, allowing the time needed to deal with the fire before it has time to break out and spread. Developed in Switzerland and manufactured in Germany, aspirating smoke detectors from Bajaj IBMS are early detection systems for fire. The cold rooms, which range in temperature from minus 4° to minus 22°C, are fitted with heated sampling points to prevent the build-up of ice affecting the system. If a sampling pipe is affected by low ambient temperatures to the point where accumulating ice crystals might adversely impact its performance, the heating automatically comes on to immediately eliminate the problem.
