In order to curb the increasing current account deficit, the Indian government has increased basic custom duty on 19 items, including air conditioners and refrigerators, effective from September 27.
The basic custom duty on these items has been doubled to 20%. In addition, the basic excise duty on compressors for refrigerators and air conditioners has been increased from 7.5% to 10%.
